Goalkeeper Drill: Up and At 'Em

Introduction

This specialized goalkeeper drill help build reactions, agility, and get your keepers used to the rough and tumble of the goal mouth. Most importantly it prepares them mentally to immediately reset themselves following a strike on goal for any kind of follow up action from the attacking team.

Set up a line of balls along the six yard box, with each ball about a yard apart. The keeper begins midway between the goal line and the six yard line and to the left of the furthest ball. The coach stands opposite him on the six yard line itself. As soon as the coaches' whistle blows the coach runs to the first ball and attempts to strike it into the net. The keeper must race him there and throw his body on the ground to smother the shot on goal. The coach now dashes to the second ball and again attempts to score. Good timing from the coach is crucial here - this isn't a flat out foot race, as the keeper must continually dive to the ground before springing again, so the coach must time his movement from one ball to the next to be rapid enough to give the keeper challenge but not so rapidly he simply outpaces the keeper and ends up shooting into an unguarded net. The right difficulty should become apparent straight away and as the keeper improves the drill can be speeded up. Make sure the drill is attempted from both sides so the goal keeper gets used to diving both left and right.
