Possession Drill: Mini Keep Ball

Introduction

Using a playing area the size of the penalty area, set up a mini game of 3 vs 3. In this game there is no goal to shoot at, the team must simply attempt to keep the ball as long as possible. Oh, and there is an additional challenge- each player is limited to a maximum of three touches of the ball after which his team mate must make the next touch. This is a great exercise to encourage free thinking of movement. Players should constantly be on their toes looking to create passing angles for their team mates. The team that doesn't have the ball should likewise be working on marking players closely, working as a unit and looking for opportunities (usually a bad touch) to close down and harry players in possession. Once the defending team gets control of the ball, or is able to knock it out of play, then the roles of the two teams switch and the team without the ball attempts to retrieve it. This is an energy intensive drill so follow it with something slightly more structured to maintain the balance of your session.

Switch participants every three minutes until all players have had a turn. If you want to turn it competitive keep your stopwatch handy and make an award for the trio who keep the ball for the longest period of time.
